“Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping” Memorial Day 2013
Sadly, not many will understand the title of this post “Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping”.
“Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping” is a hymn by Nella L. Sweet that carried the dedication to the women who decorated the graves of our fallen.
As we all enjoy the three day weekend and soak up family and friends for an extra day, we should not lose sight of what Memorial day honors. Looking out at the beautiful landscape of Steamboat Colorado I’m in total awe of what beauty we have in this country, and a sense of pride fills me. This is mine and yours, this is ours. We are able to enjoy this land as free people.
If we want to climb to the top of the highest mountain we can, if we want to drop a line in the water we can, why? Because we’re Americans and free. However, freedom is not “free”, actually it’s quite costly. My freedom comes at the cost of our men and women who have, are, and will be fighting for it. The cost doesn’t stop there, not even close. For those of you who haven’t witnessed a son say goodbye to a father or a father say goodbye to a son knowing it may be the last time please do, and you’ll just start to understand. Ask a child of a fallen solider about his dad and he’ll shoot straight. His dad is the “strongest, fastest, toughest, bravest man in the world”, and he’s right.
On Dec 2000 our country passed a resolution to help us all remember why we get that extra day to flex our freedoms. The resolution is known as the “National Moment of Remembrance” and asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps.”
For all that is beautiful in this world, please honor our fallen by remembering that our freedom is not an entitlement. Our freedom is a right that our men and women of the armed services have earned and unselfishly hand over to us Americans.
Thank you for your service,
Respectfully,
